High-Tech Garden Shed – Escape The Pace And Pressures Of Life

Just as home improvement shows have encouraged a new generation of DIY enthusiasts, research released today by Telewest Broadband shows that people across the UK are now turning their attention to shed chic and instantly adding up to 5% to the value of their homes in the process.

This could mean a surprising increase of $8,083, based on the average UK house price of $161,665 , although when questioned only one in ten people were aware of the potential goldmine sitting at the bottom of their garden.

Top of the list of shed improvement ideas is the creation of a hi-tech shed, featuring a wireless net connection and gadgetry enabling people to surf the web, play computer games and generally escape the pace and pressures of life.

According to the research, less people are using sheds solely for green fingered activity, with one in five people using their shed for non-traditional purposes, including home working, amateur dramatics and disco dancing.

The research marks the launch of Telewest Broadband's wireless pack for its high-speed blueyonder internet services – which allows you to surf the internet within a 250 metre radius of your home, without wires.

To illustrate the concept of wireless broadband internet, Telewest Broadband is also unveiling the world's first Wireless Shed. A gadget filled haven where you can surf the net without restrictive wires – it shows just how far reaching the potential of wireless broadband can be.

Chad Raube, director of internet services at Telewest Broadband, said: Now we've chucked out the chintz it’s time to get ahead with our sheds.

It's no longer about storing lawnmowers or growing seeds, but thanks to wireless technology there are new opportunities to develop sheds as havens for entertainment, work or escaping from the family.

A spokesperson for the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors said: The general rule is that the cheaper the house the higher the proportion of value added.

Based on an average priced house in the UK, its value could increase by up to 5% with the addition of a high tech, wireless converted shed. For example a terraced house at $60,000 could be sitting on a shed goldmine of $3000 while a house worth $300,000 could go up by $15,000 with development.
