Cedar Siding Shed – Wood Finishing Tips For Cedar Siding

If your garden shed or other outdoor storage buildings have cedar siding, there are a number of great wood finishing options you can consider. Cedar siding looks great and is weather-resistant, strong and durable.

Let the cedar siding weather naturally

That’s right…just leave well enough alone! Cedar siding contains naturally occurring oils and organic compounds that allow the wood to resist sun, water, and insect damage. Over time, cedar siding ages gracefully to a silver gray color with raised grain.

Use a wood sealer to block the pores of the wood

A wood sealer applied to cedar siding prevents the wood grain from becoming raised but allows the color to fade naturally to a sliver gray color.

Apply an exterior stain

Stains are another good choice for finishing cedar siding because they penetrate and will not trap moisture in the wood. You should re-apply every other year to keep the finish looking fresh.

Paint the cedar siding

For some this may be the least favored option since cedar siding, like any surface when painted, will peel and flake in time, and must be scraped to be refinished.
