February 19, 2006 By: Mark Harris Storage building built for children’s therapy centerOn May 10, Mark Knudsen, J.R. Abbott Construction led a crew of senior students from his carpentry class to construct a 150 square foot storage shed and Chris Lewis from D.W. Close Company installed the power for the shed. The shed was constructed for the Children’ s Therapy Center (CTC) in Kent to provide on site storage for wheel chairs, walkers and other items that were stored in rented storage units. It will also serve as miscellaneous storage as the center under goes a million dollar plus expansion project. Mark, who is a carpentry instructor at the Construction Industry Training Council (CITC), brought seven of his students to build the shed. “Having a real project to work on is a great way for the students to test their skills,” Mark said. “There is only so much you can do in a classroom situation. This is a great opportunity to provide a needed service while assessing skills and teaching techniques to my students.” The students echoed his sentiments saying that they enjoyed having a real project to work on, particularly one that presented a full range of skill requirements. “These volunteers were a great group of guys who really went the extra mile to help those less fortunate. Without the donation of Matheus Lumber who provided most of the materials construction of the shed would not have been possible,” said Jon Botten, Executive Director for CTC. The Children's Therapy Center is a non-profit organization whose mission for the past 24 years has been to maximize the potential of children with developmental delays and disabilities by providing individualized, family-centered, physical, occupational, speech and feeding therapy services. The Seattle District gratefully acknowledges the support of the following individuals and companies who contributed money, labor, material and or services in support of the Children’s Therapy Center project. Your contributions help give independence, pride and hope to children with disabilities. Author Notes:
